VIDEO: From Freetown with Love
Sometime in March this year, I had the pleasant
opportunity of travelling to Liberia, Sierra Leone and Cote D’Ivoire on a
business trip. So many stories from the trip for another day… While in Freetown, the capital of Sierra-Leone,
I was invited by my host to attend a Friday night gig at China House, a popular
cultural centre in the city with great live music. The food was on point, and
the music was exceptional, from the Super Combos International Band of Sierra
Leone. They rendered several melodious tunes from all across the African coast
line, from Nigerian and Ghanaian highlife music to Kenyan, Tanzanian and
Zimbabwean Zilizopendwa tunes. As one would expect from the name of the band,
Congolese Soukous, Makossa and Rumba tunes were reeled out as the crowd
relished the moment. Apparently, the
band consisted of old veteran musicians who had travelled widely across the
continent, Europe and America in the past and had returned to settle in
Freetown. Sadly, my phone battery ran out and I couldn’t capture much of the
moments. I was only able to capture this brief piece, and I hope you find it
interesting.
Here’s a brief performance of the Super Combos International Dance Band –
Freetown, Sierra-Leone.
